Tower of Teapots

I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of images that have come to me in a dream. Generally I’m suspicious of them–it’s one of the oldest artistic cliches, after all, and there’s something vaguely New Agey about it, and I suppose I have this vague fear that if I start painting my dreams, I’m starting down a road that ends with me changing my name to Starwombat and slicing off a hunk of the Astral Fruitcake.

Fortunately, it never comes up, because my dreams, while vivid and bizarre, rarely contain much paintable imagery. (Yes, I could have painted the whales exploding over Manhattan, but it would have been really unpleasant…) But every now and then, I’ll wake up with the fragment of an image in my head.

I don’t know why I was dreaming of towers of brightly colored teapots–I’d bought some Fiestaware the day before, maybe that was it–but the image stuck and I wanted to paint it.
